A goodbye Kiss

A Goodbye Kiss

The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and jostled
the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. "How embarrassing. I am

getting so clumsy in my old age."
Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to
the others. Someone said, "Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing
moment."

Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood. "I grew up in San
Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat,
but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay

out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our

family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at

home."

He looked at us and said, "I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big

man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his

catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear

his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat

would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my Mother washed

them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish."

Frank's voice dropped a bit. "When the weather was bad he would drive me to

school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That

truck was older than he was. It would wheeze and rattle down the road. You

could hear it coming for blocks. As he would drive toward the school, I

would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time, he

would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He

would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be

standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big

kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for

me. Here I was, twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me
goodbye!"

He paused and then went on, "I remember the day I decided I was too old for
a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and
said, 'No, Dad.'

It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this

surprised look on his face.

I said, 'Dad, I'm too old for a goodbye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of
kiss.'

My Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up.
I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out the windshield. 'You're right,' he said. 'You are a big boy, a man. I won't kiss you anymore.'"

Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his
eyes, as he spoke. "It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back. It was a day when most of the fleet stayed in, but not Dad. He had a big family to feed. They found his boat adrift with its nets half in and half out. He must have gotten into a gale and was trying to save the nets and the floats."

I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks.

Frank spoke again. "Guys, you don't know what I would give to have my Dad
give me just one more kiss on the cheek,to feel his rough old face,to smell

the ocean on him,to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man

then. If I had been a man, I would never have told my Dad I was too old for

a goodbye kiss."

Information please

When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember well, the polished old case fastened to the wall and the shiny receiver on the side of the box.

I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother would talk to it. Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person and her name was "Information Please" and there wasn't anything she did not know.

"Information Please" could supply anybody's number and the correct time.

My first personal experience with this genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement. I whacked my finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible but, there didn't seem to be any reason in crying because there was no one home to give me sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger finally arriving at the stairway.

The telephone!

Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and held the phone to my ear.

"Information Please" I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear.

"Information."

" I hurt my finger" I wailed into the phone. The tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.

"Isn't your mother home?" came the question.

"Nobody's home but me," I blubbered.

"Are you bleeding?" the voice asked.

"No," I replied. "I hit my finger with a hammer and it hurts."

"Can you open your icebox?" she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a piece of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice.

After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me that my pet chipmunk, which I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts.

Then there was the time Petey, our pet canary died. I called "Information Please" and told her the sad story. She listened, then said the usual thing grown-ups say to soothe a child. But, I was inconsolable. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?"

She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, "You must remember that there are other worlds to sing in."

Somehow, I felt better.

Another day I was on the telephone with "Information Please". "Information," said the now familiar voice. "How do you spell fix?'" I asked.

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston.

"Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home and somehow I never thought of trying the tall, new shiny phone that sat on the table in the hall.

As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity, I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane landed in Seattle. I had about half-an-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then, without thinking about what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information Please."

Miraculously, I heard the small clear voice I knew so well.

"Information."

I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?"

There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess you must be healed by now."

I laughed, "So it's really still you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?"

"I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls."

I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister. - "Please do," she said. "Just ask for Sally." - Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered, "Information." - I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?" she said. "Yes, a very old friend," I answered.

"I'm sorry to have to tell you this," she said. Sally had been working part time in the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago."

Before I could hang up she said, "Wait a minute. Are you Paul?"

"Yes".

"Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you." The note said, "Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean."

I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.

Never underestimate the impression you make on others. Whose life have you touched today? Why not pass this on, I just did.

When a guy loves you... (is it true?)

When a GUY is quiet and is
alone,
He is thinking of you and he misses
you.

When a GUY is lying on his bed,
He is thinking deeply why he loves
you.

When a GUY looks at you
in your eyes,
He wants to tell you how much he
loves
you and how important you are to him.

When a GUY answers "I'm Fine" after
a
while,
He is not and feels hurt.

When a GUY keep asking you the same
question,
He is wondering why you are
lying.

When a GUY hugs you while sleeping,
He is wishing that you belong to him
forever.

When a GUY calls you
everyday,
He Miss You and wants your attention.

When a GUY wants to see you
everyday,
He cares for you and he wants to know
how
are you today.

When a GUY sends message to you
everyday,
He wants you to know he is fine.

When a GUY says I love you,
He really means it.

When a GUY says that he can't
live
without you,
He has made up his mind that you are
his
future
wife.

When a GUY says "I Miss You",
He wants to see you immediately.

Friends quotes

What would you do if every time you wanted someone they would never be there?

What would you do if for every
moment you were truly happy there
would be 10 moments of
sadness?
What if your best friend died
tomorrow & you
never got to tell
them how you felt?
So, tell your friends, even if you
never talk to them again in
your life,
that they are
special to you &
made a difference in your
life.

Tell them that you
look up to them,
cherish them
& truly respect you.

Let old friends know you
haven't forgotten them &
tell your new friends
you never will.

Remember, everyone needs a
friend, someday you might feel
like you have no friends at all,
just remember this entry &
take comfort in knowing
somebody out there
cares about you & always
will.

I'll always be there

In times of trouble
In times of need
If you are feeling SAD
You can count on me
I'll give you a wink
Until you smile
give you a hug
& stand by your side
I'll be there for you till the end
I'll always & forever,
be your friend!
